A North Somerset primary school is now home to a new and improved food technology room – which teachers hope will help educate children on healthy eating.

The transformed room is based on the grounds of Yatton Infant and Junior School in High Street, which held an opening ceremony on Monday.

The Yatton Federated Schools Association held a series of fundraising events to raise enough money for the room and the Durban Trust – set up by villager Richard Durban – also donated cash towards the project.

The room can now cater for up to 15 pupils at a time and has two new electric ovens, two new hobs and two portable hobs.

There is also a new TV so children can watch video tutorials on how to prepare food safely.

Project lead Lyndsey Sprod said: “The reason for the refurbishment was because there wasn’t enough space or equipment for children to cook – it was very limited.

“There have been changes to the curriculum which means there is now a greater focus on food.

“The new room means the classes will be much more structured and more children can have access to the room to be able to cook.

“The school has been trying to encourage healthy eating and this will help children know how to pick and cook healthy choices.”
