A North Somerset primary school is the first in the district to receive an award for encouraging its pupils to cycle or walk to school.

Ashcombe Primary School in Weston-super-Mare received a bronze Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition award for encouraging walking and cycling, and for setting up road safety initiatives.

The school promoted a number of schemes including a reception class walk, child pedestrian training in year one, Bikeability cycle training in year six and a range of walk-to-school week campaigns.

To get the award, the school also had to conduct an annual survey, which identified travel issues and suggested solutions.
