STUDENTS of a Somerset secondary school took part in an annual tradition to mark Ascension Day.

Musicians from The Kings of Wessex School in Cheddar performed during a service at St Andrew’s Church last Thursday.

Year 13 students ascended the church tower singing Hail the Day to symbolise Jesus’ ascension to heaven – a tradition brought to Cheddar in the 1880s by the vicar of Magdalen College in Oxford.

Year nine students also took part in the day by eating sticky buns in the vicarage gardens.
