Skillful students from Churchill Academy and Sixth Form and Wrington Primary School have pitted their wits against a world-champion chess player.
Chess grand master and current world senior champion Keith Arkell visited Wrington on March 24 and Churchill the following day. He faced stiff competition from the Churchill chess team and three members of its teaching staff.
Of all the academy’s students, year eight chess team member Alex Webber put up the best display, managing to register a draw against the champion, and was congratulated by the school for his efforts.
Alex said: “The tension in the room was phenomenal. You could hear a pin drop. Keith was playing at such a speed and it really was inspiring.”
