Evacuee day for St Mark's

YEAR six children had first-hand experiences of what it was like to be evacuated during the war.

They began the day by packing their suitcases and pillowcases at St Mark’s Primary School in Worle, before they set off on their long walk to their destination.

Pupils were then met by stern billeting officers who inspected their luggage.

They took part in 1940s-style lessons, commenting how strict the teachers were and baked rock cakes using their rationed ingredients.

Students at the St Marks Road site also learnt to knit and darn socks, went on a fascinating nature walk and joined together in raising their spirits with the singing of war time songs.
