The first Weston-super-Mare General Election hustings event of 2017 is taking place.

The first General Election hustings is taking place in Weston-super-Mare this evening (Wednesday) – and the Mercury will be following the debate as it unfolds. You can keep up with it all here on our live blog.

Conservative candidate John Penrose, Labour candidate Tim Taylor, Liberal Democrat Mike Bell and Green candidate Suneil Basu are all due to attend the event – which the North Somerset branch of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) is hosting. Helen Hims, the UKIP candidate, has chosen not to attend.

The event will start at 7.30pm and will be held at Hans Price Academy, in Marchfield Way, Weston.

People will be able to ask the candidates for their views on some important topics surrounding education, including the growth in academies, exams, school budget cuts and grammar schools.

This is the first hustings event in the area where the candidates will be side by side answering questions about key election issues.

The Mercury will be at the event. To follow the action, keep an eye on our live blog here. You can join the debate by following us on Facebook and on Twitter @wsmercury.
