Six schools in Weston-super-Mare and Worle took part in a spelling bee.

The Kaleidoscope Multi-Academy Trust organised the event, which took place at Ashcombe Primary School.

Pupils in each year group learned the national curriculum spelling list and competed in heats in their schools to win the chance to go against children from other schools.

They took it in turns to spell a selection of difficult words from their year group until the last child was standing.

Worle Village Primary School headteacher Sue Elliott said: “The standard was amazingly high and in all year groups had we had to use the next set of year group spellings to catch them out.

“There were a selection of winners from each school but overall St Martin’s Primary School won the title and took home the coveted spelling bee statue.”

Pupils from Christ Church, Hutton and Becket primary schools also took part.
