A YEAR five boy has been excluded from the classroom after taking a knife into school and allegedly threatening pupils.

The Mercury was contacted by a concerned parent who said the boy - aged nine or 10 - had been excluded for taking the knife to Hugh Sexey Middle School and threatening pupils, a day after physically assaulting a girl classmate.

They said some parents had kept their children out of lessons in protest, although the Blackford school’s acting headteacher told the Mercury it had been an isolated incident and staff took swift action .

Liz Stiddard, acting headteacher, said: “The safety of our pupils is of paramount importance and we would like to reassure parents that this was an isolated incident which was dealt with quickly and robustly by the school.”

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said the incident had not resulted in an investigation.
