YOUNGSTERS were at the unveiling of a mural which has helped brighten up a derelict building in their village.

The Wonders Of The Gorge piece was painted on the side of the disused Cox’s Mill Hotel building in Cheddar by artist Richard Blaker with help from pupils from Cheddar First School and Fairlands Middle School.

The 33m-long mural was commissioned by Longleat Enterprises, which owns the building and is currently seeking to install cable cars in the village.

Youngsters from years four and five painted hundreds of specially cut-out wooden shapes, making leaves, butterflies, bats and voles while year seven and eight pupils painted more complex animals including a peregrine falcon and an eagle.

Over the summer holidays, Mr Blaker assembled the pieces on the wall and recorded the names of all the children who helped with the painting.
