Globe Carnival Club is in the process of preparing for one of Weston’s biggest events of the year.
The club based in Wells has already taken part in Bridgwater and Burnham’s carnivals – and promises to make the cart even more spectacular for Weston’s event on Friday.
Volunteer members, ground crew and the club’s performers have worked from December last year stripping back the previous cart’s design and building it up again from scratch since January.
More than 50 members make up the club which is part of the Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnival Association’s circuit and the event takes place on the first Saturday of November and ends exactly two weeks later.
Member Charlie Hughes designed the cart’s entry this year, he said: “I have always wanted to do a pirate theme since I first joined Globe back in 2012.
“The idea has changed during the years, but with the help of Martyn O’Neill we came up with the final design – and I couldn’t of been happier with it.
“It was originally going to be a ghost ship with the undead rising up from the sea – but slowly as year went on we started to change the cart around.
“It was always going to be based on a ship being destroyed and ripped apart by a kraken, but we just needed to work around it and figure out the right way to make this year’s cart the best we could possibly bring out for Globe’s 50th year in carnival.”
Some of the club entry’s moving parts were not fully up and running for Burnham’s carnival on Monday, but their members have worked tirelessly to get them all working for Weston’s carnival tomorrow.
Cart performer and joint designer Martyn said: “We really wanted to push ourselves and build something which looks very different from all of our other entries – and I think with the rocking boat sections and the new LED lighting set up in the roof we have managed to pull it off.”
“Finding a theme the club has never done before was quite important, and looking back through the records it seemed to fit when the idea was first mentioned two years ago.
“We only held it back so we could give it a real go during such a sentimental year for us.”
Weston’s carnival procession starts at 7.15pm from Locking Road Car Park.
