BACKWELL Parish Council has four new members, but a former chairmen is not among them. The election, on April 6, was called following the resignation of four councillors in January.Cllrs Roger and Joy Theis, Rita Mason and Alison Tull resigned after Tom Wilson reported them to the Standards Board for England. The national watchdog, which governs the conduct of councillors, decided not to refer the allegations for investigation.Mr Wilson appealed against the decision, but the organisation reviewed the case and concluded its original ruling was correct.Rodney Drew, Michelle Gibbons-Price, Sue Merriman, Sarah Ould and Tom Wilson stood for election on Thursday and polled 640, 603, 627, 614 and 61 respectively. As a result, the first four were elected to serve as parish councillors in the village. Since last Thursday's election was called, another vacancy has arisen. Cllr Laurie Gathercole resigned with effect from March 31 due to 'family and personal reasons'.Mr Wilson said he will not be seeking to fill it. He said: "I thank all those who came out to vote and exercised their democratic right. "The election result was predictable and expected, considering the recent negative letters, press coverage and my Nailsea address."As someone remarked the other day, I am probably more dangerous outside the council. I shall not pursue the new vacancy at Backwell."If, by midnight on May 4, 10 electors of the parish have requested an election, one must be held 'on any convenient Thursday' no later than July 6. If no request is made, the parish council may choose, or elect, someone to fill the vacancy.
