AN EXTRA lane could soon be created at Portishead's chaotic Cabstand in an effort to end the junction's daily traffic turmoil.Road experts have launched a study into the possibility of building a new lane and hope it could spell an end to the gloom motorists face when they have to tackle the notorious junction. The lane would run from the Methodist Church in High Street to the Cabstand traffic lights, which were introduced in May last year.North Somerset Councillor John Crockford-Hawley revealed the proposal after campaigners again attacked the authority on its handling of the troublesome traffic lights at its annual meeting.Cllr Crockford-Hawley said: "I am looking to see if it is possible to add an extra traffic lane running from the Methodist Church in High Street to the traffic light junction to improve the situation."Council officers are carrying out a feasibility study into whether the lane would be possible at the moment. At the meeting David Jolley, who has helped co-ordinate a campaign for changes to be made at the junction, said the council had left residents' questions unanswered and had been arrogant in the handling of complaints.Speaking at the meeting held at Weston Town Hall, he said: "What has really angered residents' is the response to our complaints."Officers have recommended a scheme with little local knowledge or foresight to the consequences."Officers have come across as intransigent and arrogant in defence of the mistakes they have made."Mr Jolley also said the town desperately needed a railway line and said residents feared that as new housing developments were built access to the redundant cuttings would be lost.
