WESTON'S successful Street Pastors force gained a new unlikely recruit recently in the shape of John Penrose MP.

The organisation has grown considerably since it was founded in 2006 and provides advice and an ear to young people who feel marginalised or excluded.

The Tourism Minister joined a four-man team on the town’s streets on a recent Saturday night to see for himself the work the pastors carry out.

He said: “I’ve been out regularly with the police to see how they’re dealing with Weston’s late night economy but the Street Pastors provide a different perspective.

“They’re very popular with Weston’s late night revellers who told me their friends had been helped by them.

“The Street Pastors have become a well known and valued local service and best of all they’re an entirely voluntary organisation.”

Jane Milsom, Weston’s Street Pastors co-ordinator, said to get the support of Mr Penrsoe was invaluable to the organisation.

She said they liaise with the emergency services and bars throughout the night to provide the best service they can.

Anyone interested in training to become a pastor can contact the group on 07766 678446.
