Farmland to host 61 holiday lodges?

FARMLAND which is used for car boot sales could be transformed into a holiday park if a planning application is granted.

A bid to use farmland off Accommodation Road in Bleadon as a holiday lodge site has been submitted to North Somerset Council.

The plans include 61 wooden chalets, but there would not be spaces for camping or mobile caravans.

In the design and access statement, the applicant said: “Standard static caravans are not considered to be appropriate for a countryside location because the utilitarian nature of their design would make it difficult for them to blend in with their surroundings.

“To avoid any adverse effect on the rural character of the landscape of this part of the Somerset moors, timber chalets and log cabins are proposed, as these will be more sympathetic to the rural location.”

The applicant, Claremont North Somerset, hopes during the peak season it can employ six people on a weekday and nine on a weekend.

Weston Wake Park, which was given full planning permission earlier this year, will be built on the adjacent site.

The applicant said: “The regional watersports centre will attract a large number of visitors to the area to use their facilities and it is safe to assume that a percentage of these visitors will also require short term tourist accommodation in the area.

“With a growing number of watersport enthusiasts, a prime location in beautiful countryside that is also near to a popular tourist resort, good motorway access and a large number of urban areas to draw upon, there is every reason to suspect that the proposed caravan site would be well-received by visitors.”

The application can be viewed on the council’s online planning portal and is open for comments.
