THE father of a football player punched to the floor after a heroic FA cup win broadcast on television has branded the assault ‘madness’.

Weston FC manager Craig Laird watched in horror as his son Scott, aged 22, was attacked by a fan following Stevenage Borough’s win over Newcastle United on Saturday night.

The assault shocked millions of television viewers and made national news as police launched a search for the offender.

Craig, who has been at the managerial reins at Weston since August, said: “I was really disappointed with the attack, it marked a sour end to such a good day.

“Fortunately, he is ok. The physio said he came off feeling a bit dizzy, and that’s when we knew he was fine because he’s always like that.”

A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault following an alleged offence at Stevenage’s football ground.
