Fear of fly-tipping increase

SOMERSET councillors fear fly-tipping will increase after Conservatives backed the authority's decision to reduce opening hours at local tips on Sunday afternoons.
In addition to reversing opening hours, Liberal Democrat members called on Somerset County Council to scrap the Tip Tax at four waste centres in Somerset.
Paul Maxwell, Lib Dem councillor, said: “Since the Conservatives reduced the opening hours to all tips, particularly on Sunday afternoons, fly-tipping has rocketed right across Somerset.
“The decision to reduce the opening hours to periods of the week when most people are working is just further evidence of a council completely out of touch with local residents.”
Liberal Democrat group leader, Cllr Sam Crabb added: “In the long run, the extra costs incurred from landfill and by clearing fly-tipping are proving a false economy. If the recycling rate stays static, then the costs to every council tax payer goes up, either in terms of more council tax or reduced front-line services.
“It’s both the local tax payer and local environment which are paying the price. The common sense solution is to do everything we can to increase recycling.”
