A DANGEROUS bridge is continuing to cause concern in Cheddar, but councillors believe it will take a serious accident before something is finally done about it.Cheddar Bridge in Church Street has no footpath and motorists travelling from Draycott have to negotiate a blind bend before heading over the bridge, meaning they cannot see whether there are any pedestrians on it.Sedgemoor district councillor Jeff Savage said: "It's an absolute nightmare because there's no footway. There is a caravan park on the other side of the village and pedestrians try to cross the bridge to get into Cheddar but it's so narrow."It will probably require a very serious accident before anything is done."When Draycott Park housing estate was built, a new pedestrian and cycle route was also put in, but people have not been using it.One idea proposed is for more signs to highlight the new footpath away from the bridge, but as yet nothing has been done.Cheddar Parish Council is asking Somerset Highways to look at the black spot again.Cllr Savage said: "There's no possibility of widening the carriageway because properties are built up to the road."People don't tend to use the footpath because it's further away and they tend to take the shortcut. The solution is not easy or we would have done something about it."People are blissfully unaware of how dangerous it is. I sincerely believe something should be done about it. I have my heart in my mouth every time I go round there.
