RESIDENTS in a picturesque rural hamlet say they will be flooded if a proposed development is given the go-ahead.People living in Alstone near West Huntspill are busy penning letters of objection to Sedgemoor District Council over an outline planning application to build 22 houses in Alstone Lane. Villager Margaret McDowell, who lives in Alstone Road, said: "The developers and owners of the property have absolutely no local interest. They will give no thought to the site or the people who remain in Alstone once the land is sold."If planning consent is granted then the plans will ensure that Alstone is no longer a small, beautiful area."Recently a resident was denied planning permission because the risk of flooding was too high, so how can this development even be considered?"During heavy rain last week Margaret noted that large puddles collected in the road and flooded a yard. Developers Charlcombe Estates, a Bath company, submitted outline proposals to build the houses on an area which is of archaeological interest. If outline planning consent is granted, the company will spend around £100,000 on an archaeological dig before applying for full planning permission. Comments can be made on the application at www.sedgemoor.gov.uk until July 31.
