The people of Weston-super-Mare reacted with a mixture of sadness, acceptance and excitement at the news that the former Tropicana pool is being filled in, as part of a £300,000 refurbishment plan. The idea is to allow the seafront pool to be re-utilised as an events space, with exhibitions, live music and theatre likely to light up the Trop.

But the news was not entirely welcomed by Weston’s residents, as many lamented North Somerset Council’s decision to go against popular opinion and decline the idea of restoring the old pool.

Starting a thread on Streetlife, Terry K broke the news of the resurfacing, adding: “Inside the Tropicana, the pool is no more,” sparking debate.

With big plans to draw crowds back to the seafront – as Dismaland did – the council will hope events at the Tropicana can do the same, but some are not convinced.

On Facebook, Andrew Varney replied: “Do the plans include a covered swimming pool? No? Well then, I think the plans are pathetic.”

Caroline Taylor said: “Such a shame, had great childhood memories at the Tropicana.”

Back on Streetlife, there was an air of positivity, with people accepting that a vibrant events space on the seafront was exactly what Weston needed.

Oli J said: “Ah you know, who cares if it’s not a pool.

“The potential for events in this space is really exciting. Bring on summer.

“Weston is on the up, at last.

“I went to the Fat Boy Slim event at Dismaland and you really got a sense for the buzz of the place at an event like that, in late summer.

“I think the majority of people now see the sense in not having the pool.

“The cost to build, maintain, and staff a big pool like that, I would assume would be (too) expensive.”

And Maureen B added: “Let’s be positive – I agree with Oli J, the potential for using the Tropicana for events or as an arts venue should be taken up by the council who have done a good job with the café there. I hope Weston is on the up at last.”

Terry K added: “I also agree that it will be good to see the building used positively and I really hope it will bring progress to the town.”

It remains to be seen what events will be brought to Weston’s seafront, but there is genuine hope that the Tropicana can be the toast of the town once more, albeit without the addition of a swimming pool.
