RESIDENTS at a care home in Burnham had to be evacuated after a fire broke out in an upper floor room.

Fire crews were called to the Hillview Nursing Home, in Berrow Road, at around 5.30pm on Friday.

Two of the elderly residents were bed-ridden but were safe enough to remain until fire crews offered to help bring them downstairs to be transported to another home.

The other 26 residents, who were in the communal rooms downstairs, were evacuated from the ground floor

The pensioners had to be housed elsewhere due to safety concerns, although no one was hurt in the incident.

Fire appliances from Burnham, Bridgwater, Taunton and Street attended the blaze.

Investigations into the cause of the fire have been completed by the fire service and the matter has been handed to the police.
