A FIELD of crops caught alight yesterday (Sunday) and firefighters were despatched to battle the blaze.

A fire appliance and a 4x4 vehicle with fire-fighting equipment from Cheddar were despatched at 5pm to reports of a field of miscanthus plants, commonly known as elephant grass, on fire.

Crews found a field close to the reservoir in Sharpham Road with about 20 acres of elephant grass at 7ft-high, well alight.

Crews used beaters and water to create a fire break and surround the fire to extinguish it.
