AVON Fire And Rescue Service has announced its crews will be based at the site of a flat fire in Weston-super-Mare overnight.
The fire is now under control after crews battled for more than four hours against the blaze.
A spokesman for the service said: “Firefighters are expected to remain on the scene of the fire for much of the night.
“The fire is now under control. However, small pockets of fire remain in the roof area, so water is still being projected on to these.
“Crews are currently assessing the safety of the building before committing anyone inside to search the premises.
“An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway and is expected to continue tomorrow.”
The alarm was raised at about 4.50pm this afternoon (Tuesday) as a fire broke out in a flat in Beach Road near Tutto Restaurant.
People were evacuated from nearby businesses and flats as a precaution. Many are still waiting to get back inside.
St James Street and Regent Street have been closed by police while the emergency services work at the scene.
