Weston College’s refurbishment of the town’s iconic Winter Gardens is nearing completion, and the Mercury got an exclusive look inside.
The pictures show just how much work has gone into the project, with a new state-of-the-art law and professional services academy just needing finishing touches, the ballroom restored to its former glory and a new sea-view restaurant set to welcome Weston’s foodies.
Back in January 2015 the college bought the site from North Somerset Council for £1 and it was formally handed over in May last year and since then work has been ongoing to completely revamp the site.
The university centre and law and professional services academy will be open 24 hours for students and has been kitted out with impressive computer equipment, study pods and meeting rooms, with views of the Italian Gardens, and The Royal Hotel all adding to the new look.
There is still a café at the back of the Winter Gardens, which will also be open to the public. It will serve snacks, drinks and some hot food.
However, it is the ballroom which will have the biggest impact on the town and bookings have already been made for the space, which plans to play host to a number of different functions.
Particular attention has been paid to the acoustics of the room, as well as new windows and flooring which have given the whole thing a brighter look.

As well as this, there will be a number of function rooms which will be available to hire.
The former Tourist Information Centre has also been transformed into a two-storey sea-view restaurant, with kitchen equipment all ready to go and tables and the bar still to be added.
The Mercury understands the law and professional services academy and university centre will be fully completed for the new intake in September, while the ballroom will be finished in time for University Centre Weston’s (UCW) graduation ceremony on September 23.
There will then be a gradual opening process for the restaurant and other function rooms, with a full-scale grand opening billed for January next year.
