FARES in and around Weston town centre have been increased by First bus this month as the company deal with 'increasing pressures' on their finances.

Across Somerset, single and return tickets for both adults and children will rise by up to 55p, which general manager Jenny MacLeod said was a necessity.

She said: “We understand that this will not be welcome news, but we need to revise some of our fares to ensure that they adequately cover the costs we face in operating buses in this part of the world.

“Over recent years there has been increasing pressure on our business as we contend with rising fuel costs and reductions in the level and type of funding we are able to access.

“We have kept the increases as small as we have been able to, and where possible have frozen some of the most popular fares.”

Since the new fares were introduced this week, adult day fares in Weston now cost £2.80 off peak and £4.10 on peak.

The move comes as a further blow to public transport commuters after train fares also rose by up to six per cent this month.
