Emergency services were called to the scene on the A38 Bridgwater Road near the Premier Inn hotel, just outside of Winscombe, at 4.25pm.

Ambulances, police cars, fire engines and air ambulances were called to the scene.

A police spokesman said: “We were called to the scene of a two-vehicle road traffic collision at 4.25pm today.

“The road is blocked and there are believed to be a number of casualties and walking wounded.

“We are in the process of closing the road on the Cheddar-side of the A38 and we advise drivers to avoid this area as the road may be closed for some time.”

An ambulance spokesman said: “We were called just before 4.30pm to attend a road traffic collision involving two vehicles on Bridgwater Road, in Winscombe.

“We are attending this incident with four ambulances, an air ambulance and two operations officers. There are five patients. The police and fire service are aware of this incident.”
