A cat was rescued from a ‘severe’ flat fire in Weston-super-Mare this lunchtime.

Five engines from Avon Fire and Rescue Service were called to St Ives Road at 12.30pm as a first-floor flat in a two-storey building was alight.

No-one was injured in the blaze, which has been described as ‘severe’, but firefighters did rescue a cat from the flat.

Crews extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to neighbouring properties, although they were affected by water damage and smoke.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
