OVER £30,000 was spent on sandbags and temporary flood defences for Weston during high tides in September.North Somerset Council hired contractors Ringway to shore-up flood defences at a cost of £32,593.Conservative leader for North Somerset Councillor Mike Roe said: "The money was for just three days cover and there were a further three days work in October which I have to assume was a similar cost."We are talking about £10,000 per day for basically sandbags and labour. "I would have thought it would be possible to stand down some of the men given the forecast for very calm conditions."Councillor John Crockford-Hawley, who is leading Weston's sea defence upgrade project, said: "It's a lot of money and when I heard I queried whether an extra zero had been added by accident."I want to know exactly why the figure is that high and what it covers."If we hadn't enacted our emergency procedure and there was flooding, the story would be the other way round.
