PLANS to revamp Weston sea defences have received a cash boost of £250,000. The Wessex Regional Flood Defence

PLANS to revamp Weston sea defences have received a cash boost of £250,000.The Wessex Regional Flood Defence Committee handed over the money to North Somerset Council on Tuesday. The money will be used by the council as half of a £500,000 budget to produce detailed drawings, carry out surveys and apply for planning permission for the £7m scheme. The council hopes to present all the paperwork for the initiative to heighten the sea wall and build a second splash wall to the Government by the end of the summer. The proposals to improve the defences were dealt a hammer blow earlier this year when the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) revealed it was unlikely to fund the scheme in 2007/08 as council officers originally thought. The council's executive member for planning Councillor John Crockford-Hawley said: " This extra cash is excellent news. We want to give all the information to the Government in time for the autumn spending review in the hope of getting funding for next year."If funding is not forthcoming then everything will be ready for the following year. It will not be a waste of money.
