STRONG winds and high tides are set to batter Weston seafront over the weekend.

North Somerset Council will close the flood defences two hours before each high tide this weekend and reopen them when safe to do so.

Heavy rain is expected to hit the region hard today (Fri) and in parts over the weekend.

A council spokesman said due to the number of guests expected at the Grand Pier, the gates outside the attraction would be the last to close and the first to reopen.

Gates near the pier will therefore be closed at about 6.45pm tonight and 7.30pm tomorrow (Sat). Others along the seafront will however be closed earlier.

The council is also warning business owners and homeowners to keep an eye on weather conditions around high tides and to take any steps they feel necessary to provide additional protection.
