WESTON MP John Penrose is meeting with the Government minister responsible for coastal flood defences to urge him to fund a scheme for Weston.Mr Penrose wrote to MP Ian Pearson, minister for climate change and environment, outlining the risks to the town from rising sea levels and he has agreed to meet with Mr Penrose.Mr Penrose is hoping representatives from North Somerset Council will also attend the meeting to discuss its proposed design for a new sea wall and ensure the right defence scheme is picked for Weston.Mr Penrose said: "Like many local people I have concerns about the council's proposed design, but we need an 'in principle' commitment for Government funding while the details are sorted out. "It's critical we get this right. Weston needs an attractive design for visitors and local residents alike. "We know it has got to be safe and affordable, but it must make the seafront look good too."If the council gets it wrong, it risks becoming a massive concrete eyesore. If we get it right, it could become a landmark for the seafront, a flagship development that will promote the tourist trade and enhance the town's regeneration.
