Foodbank needs help to fill 500 boxes

A CHARITY which hands food to those in need is appealing for donations to try to reach a target of about five tons of goods this month.

Weston Foodbank has launched its June food-raising challenge, aiming to fill 500 boxes with non-perishable foods.

The charity is looking to residents and businesses to help out.

Spokesman Gillian Garforth said: “With a worsening economy, benefit cuts and delays, debt, sudden loss of employment, relationship breakdowns and so on, many more people are being referred to Foodbank by voucher-issuing agencies for help.

“Each week, around 30 individuals and families are given three days of nutritionally balanced food. Week on week the amount given out far exceeds the amount donated to replenish the shelves.”

She said the Foodbank is starting to run low on essentials and may not have enough to meet demand if more donations are not made.

The Foodbank office in Princess Royal Square will be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am-4pm.

Donations can also be made at The Life Bookshop in The Centre and Milton Baptist Church in Baytree Road, which is open on weekdays from 9am-12.30pm.

Businesses, groups or clubs which want a food box to fill can call 07770 525812.
