JAM, Jerusalem and pole dancing could soon be the flavour of the day at WI meetings across the district.Members of the women-only groups in Kewstoke, Worle and Uphill could soon be among those giving up their knitting and learning to dance around a metal post in their spare time. The idea to introduce more unusual activities is part of the Avon Federation of Women's Institutes' recruitment drive. The organisation is trying to appeal to younger generations, as well as retain its current membership in its 120 groups across the former Avon area.Adviser and volunteer for the federation, Sally Nicol, lives in Portishead and is a member of Portbury WI.She said: "There are younger WI groups starting up across the country."You do not have to wait until you're a granny to join. Most have members of mixed ages."But if ladies under 40 or 50 years old turned up and wanted to learn quad biking or pole dancing we may set the groups up."Older members could join in as well if they wanted to."Avon Federation of WIs will hold two drop-in sessions in Locking Castle later this month to talk to people about joining a group or even forming a new one.Keen pole dancers, quad bikers or artists can pop into the community centre in Jasmine Way on May 18 from 2.30-4pm and 7-9pm.
