THE funeral of a former councillor and honorary alderman will take place tomorrow (Fri).
Ella Nicholls, who was a key member of the co-operative and Labour parties in the area, died earlier this month.
She moved to Weston in the 1940s, was a councillor for the South Ward area of Weston from 1961-1986 and was awarded the National Merit Award by Tony Blair.
Although she was put forward by others to be mayor of Weston on a number of occasions, she declined the offer. In September 2003 she became an honorary alderman for her services to the former authorities that now make up North Somerset.
A former governor of Bournville school, Mrs Nicholls was also a member of the Community Health Council and worked hard to help secure the new hospital for Weston.
She was fond of ballroom dancing and arranged weekly tea dances at Bournville Community Centre.
Her son Peter said: “She also greatly enjoyed her adopted family of two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.”
