THE wife of a popular former mayor of Weston who died last month has paid tribute to her ‘larger than life’ husband.

Charles Heard served as mayor of the town between 2005 and 2006, representing Weston at more than 350 presentations, parties and events and which he described as the ‘year of the young’.

He died peacefully at Weston General Hospital on May 21, 15 days after his 73rd birthday.

His wife Gillian said: “Those who knew him will remember his kindness and willingness to help others, a larger than life figure with a tremendous sense of humour.

“The honour of being mayor, meeting and greeting so many during the year was, for him, an experience never to be forgotten. It opened his eyes to the many charities and organisations whose volunteers work tirelessly to improve the lives of others.”

Mr Heard was given an honorary membership to Barcode Youth Cafe, having become a firm favourite at the premises through the numerous events he took part in. His funeral will be held at St John The Baptist Church, Lower Church Road, on Tuesday at 2.30pm.
