The Town Square and gardens have been closed since January to allow remodelling work to take place, involving the installation of a 158,000-litre water tank and 16,500 granite slabs.

The area is expected to reopen on August 5, and to mark the occasion, an action-packed day of family entertainment has been arranged.

A host of live music, ranging from samba to sea shanties, will be included, along with circus performers, a fire-breathing mechanical horse, a steel dragon named Elsie, and a wide range of street performers.

The event is scheduled to last throughout the day and into the evening, finishing at 10.30pm with a breathtaking fire troupe finale.

A wide variety of food and drink will be on offer too, plus a bar area supported by The Imperial pub.
