SO, HOW did you spend your Christmas Day? Quality time with the family? Relaxing in front of the big TV blockbuster? Gobbling your own bodyweight in turkey?

Or were you one of the dozens of hardy souls who donned crazy fancy dress and then – even more crazily – sprinted into Weston’s near-freezing Marine Lake?

The annual tradition, organised by The Cove restaurant, is growing every year, and this time the fair weather helped attract a crowd of spectators running into hundreds.

Onlookers cheered as the participants – wearing costumes ranging from ninja turtles to bananas – sprinted en masse into the chilly waters.

Behind the fun was a serious cause, though, with the event organised to help raise money towards an appeal by Weston RNLI to build a new base.

The charity was forced out of its Birnbeck home last year because of the decaying and dangerous state of the pier, but is well on the way to raising the £300,000 it needs to build a new headquarters elsewhere in the town.
