RUNNERS braved wind and rain last weekend to raise more than £45,000 for Weston Hospicecare.

The Mendip Challenge saw more than 600 keen runners and walkers race across the Mendip Hills to raise money for the charity.

The annual event saw runners take on 10, 20 or 30 mile routes along West Mendip Way in aid of the hospice and its vital work caring for terminally ill people.

The organiser of the event said: “This year’s challenge went very well.

“We had 671 people take on the course this year, so we are very happy.

“Although the weather was blustery and a little bit rainy in the morning, it did not put anyone off.”

Runners celebrated their efforts at an after party complete with live music at Westhaven School, in Uphill. All participants received a medal as a memento of the day.
