THERE was a carnival-atmosphere in Weston town centre as feather boas and wide smiles greeted the town's first gay pride event.

A parade through the High Street set off just before Saturday lunchtime with hundreds making their way through the streets to Grove Park, where the main entertainment took place.

Grove Park was full of stalls and stages with a number of singing acts performing.

Leslie Lush, wearing an outfit costing almost £1,000, said: “When we arrived at Grove Park I was shocked to see how many people were already there.

“The whole event was planned very well and spaced out over the grounds of Grove Park. There were children running around fascinated with the feathers and bright colours that surrounded them.

“The support from the town was very overwhelming.”

The event was supported by Avon and Somerset Constabulary’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) team, who were keen to promote the serious message behind the entertainment.

LGBT Liaison Officer, Daniel Moulden, said: “We were delighted
to go to the first pride event in Weston. It was a really positive day for the town.

“Myself and the constabulary’s LGBT team were there to talk to people, give advice, help promote awareness and hopefully encourage people to have the confidence to report any incidents of hate crime to us. It’s vital that we have people’s trust and confidence.

“Homophobia, indeed any form of hate crime, is absolutely unacceptable and an issue the police take extremely seriously.”
