FORMER sportsman Geoff Bailey has died.Mr Bailey who was well-known in his home village of Uphill, died on March 4 after 38 years coping with multiple sclerosis.Barbara, his wife of 45 years, said: "I will always remember his cheerfulness and sense of humour in the face of severe disability."He never complained despite not being able to move for 20 years and being registered blind."He was extremely bright, led an active life and had many, many friends."Geoff had many and varied interests."During his lifetime Mr Bailey, of Ellesmere Road, followed a family tradition by joining Weston Operatic Society. His parents and uncle shared his love of song and stage and were active members of the society. His daughter, Philippa Jane, continued in his footsteps and joined the society as well.A life-long animal lover, Mr Bailey and his wife trained dogs and held a long-term interest in riding and the pony club.He was a founder member of Woodspring Talking News and The Notable Club.His friendship with Jeffrey Archer led to an appearance on This Is Your Life with the Somerset cricket team in 1981.Sport played a key role in his life until he would no longer compete because of his disability. Mr Bailey played rugby for Weston Rugby Club and Winscombe Rugby Club, was a keen swimmer and taught scouts to sail on the River Axe.In his working life Mr Bailey was an auditor for Courage (Western) Ltd after a spell with his family business of Phillips and Co wine and spirit merchants. Mr Bailey, who died age 68, left a daughter, Philippa Jane, a son, Stephen and three grandchildren, Amy, Lucas and Mia-Lyn.His 100-year-old mother Gwen has outlived Mr Bailey. However he was able to attend her centennial birthday in January.A service of thanksgiving is being held on Monday (March 13) at 12.15pm at St Nicholas Church in Uphill. Donations c/o The Elms Funeral Directors to be shared between St Nicholas Church re-ordering fund, the RNLI and Woodspring Talking News.
