COMMUNITY safety bosses are to press North Somerset highway chiefs to repair Clevedon's pothole ridden roads.Clevedon Local Action Team (LAT) say they are fed up with the state of road surfaces around the town and are to write to North Somerset highways department calling for a programme of urgent repairs. One of the areas highlighted as being particularly poor was Spray Corner where there are a number of potholes and the road surface is crumbling.Clevedon LAT chairman Patrick McNeill said: "The roads in Clevedon are appalling."Some of the holes are so big, you can imagine someone falling down them. The potholes are all over the place."The council has obviously been round to some areas and marked out where repairs are needed by using yellow paint."However, this was done so long ago that the paint is now starting to wear off."Cllr McNeill said he was concerned a motorist or pedestrian could be hurt or injured as a result of the poor road surface. He added: "It is very dangerous to have the surface on parts of a major road breaking up and could cause accidents."Other local action teams have also complained about the poor state of the district's roads. In Portishead, LAT chiefs are pressing for the main Portishead to Clevedon Road - which is also littered with holes - to be repaired. And in Nailsea, the town council is asking LAT members to conduct a survey of the condition of the area's roads.North Somerset Council spokesman Nick Yates said: "We have a road maintenance programme."All roads are inspected at least once a year and are repaired on a priority basis."Repairs could include pothole filling, small patching works or complete resurfacing, depending on the most cost effective solution and funding available.
