A SCHEME to get children across Weston active throughout the summer has expanded after three successful years and more groups than ever will now be able to apply for a share of an £11,000 funding pot.

Go Kids Go! is now in its fourth year and the Mercury has once again teamed up with Weston Lions Club to hand out cash to help get children active in and around Weston.

Last year, 24 groups won Go Kids Go! grants, which were handed out at a presentation ceremony at the Lions’ Real Ale Festival.

Now, Go Kids Go! is back, with £11,000 confirmed so far, and has expanded the eligibility to include more children’s clubs.

Lions member Malcolm Timmis said: “We want to broaden Go Kids Go! this year, it’s not just sports clubs, it’s anything which provides activity, which gets the kids socialising out and about.

“Whether that’s theatre and drama clubs or gardening clubs, we want to hear from anyone who helps get children out and about and off their games consoles.”

If you run a community group which you think deserves a helping hand from the scheme, are based within the postcode areas BS22, BS23, BS24 or BS25, and are a registered club, charity or not-for-profit organisation, you can apply for a grant.

The money could be used for new sports equipment, building improvements, playgroup and games equipment, sporting kits and more.

This year, Alliance Homes, Nightingales, The Mead Group, The Howard Group, Quadron Services, Weston College, The Grand Pier, Crosville Motor Services, McDonald’s, the Mercury and Weston Lions have all pledged funds to the scheme, with more sponsors expected to swell the pot further before the festival.

The winners will be announced in the Mercury on July 23 and presentations of the grants will be held on the final day of the Lions’ ale festival, which will on the Beach Lawns from July 24-26 and is now in its eighth year.
