CHILDREN'S clubs aiming to get youngsters active this summer are today being given the chance to scoop funds from this year's £12,000 Go Kids Go! pot.

The Mercury has teamed up with Weston Lions Club for a third year to hand out cash to groups and organisations which want to help children get fit and become more healthy.

Last year saw £10,000 handed out to 19 clubs at the Lions’ Real Ale Festival but now the money on offer has grown and Lions member Malcolm Timmins says he wants to see even more clubs awarded cash.

He said: “We are looking for applications from any group who promote health and activity in young people.

“With a bigger total of £12,000, clubs can bid for grants of up to £2,000 and we are hoping to reach more people – more than the 19 we had last year.

“We want to encourage any group which gets young people physically active to apply.”

The increase in this year’s total is thanks to a variety of businesses which have come forward to support Go Kids Go! A presentation will be held in July.

Companies such as the Grand Pier, Mead Group, Nightingales, Howard Group, Quadron Services and Alliance Homes have donated cash, as well as The Mercury, Weston Lions Club, Weston Town Council and Weston Carnival Committee.

If you run a community group that encourages sport and wellbeing for young people, are based within the postcode areas BS22, BS23, BS24 and BS25 and are a registered club, charity or not-for-profit organisation you can apply for a grant.

The grants could be used for schemes or items such as new training equipment, clubhouse improvements, playgroup equipment or kits, shirts and bats.

Presentations of the grants will be held at the Weston Lions’ real ale festival, which will go ahead on Beach Lawns from July 25-27 and is now in its seventh year.
