Ale festival organisers are hailing this year’s event as the best yet after raising thousands of pounds.

Wedmore’s real ale festival is in its 18th year, and fittingly it raised more than £18,000.

Grants, ranging from £300 to £10,000, were handed out at the weekend to organisations including Wedmore in Bloom, Blackford Village Hall and the village’s playing fields management committee.

A show spokesman said: “Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, wonderful volunteers and all those who attended, drank, bid, danced, raffled, ate and made merry at the 18th Wedmore Real Ale Festival, we’re delighted to announce this year’s festival was our most successful festival yet and generated a whopping £18,150 for local worthy causes.”

Focus has already shifted to next year’s festival, which will run from September 20-22.
