CRIMEBUSTERS are looking for more people to join Neighbourhood Watch schemes in Backwell.Currently the village has 71 co-ordinators who cover most of Backwell and Brockley, but there are still some streets without a watching eye over them.As part of their role, co-ordinators deliver the group's and North Somerset's quarterly newsletter and act as a point of contact for anyone with crime or security concerns. They also receive warning messages from the police about incidents which they then relay to the rest of their neighbours in the street.Areas which currently need co-ordinators are Waverley Road, Moor Lane and Longthorne.Backwell Neighbourhood Watch chairman Michael Foss said: "Those areas which are not covered by Neighbourhood Watch make themselves more vulnerable than those who are."We meet once a month and this gives us the opportunity to discuss with the beat manager or community support officer issues of concern within the village."It also gives us the chance to look at the latest scams which are going on and warn others as well as look at ways to give crime prevention advice to people."The group also operates an incident reporting scheme where forms are left at MICA Hardware and the Post Office.Residents can use the form to register an incident and pop it into a special post box at both stores. The incident logs are then passed to either the police or North Somerset Council.Mr Foss said:"There is no doubt that Neighbourhood Watch schemes do deter criminals."We do cover most of Backwell and Brockley but we would like to ensure every street had a co-ordinator."Anyone who wants to discuss becoming a co-ordinator can call Mr Foss on 01275 543135.
