JACOB'S Ladder at Cheddar Gorge, will now be known as The 274 Steps, after officials decided that visitors did not understand the reference. Jacob's Ladder refers to a story in the Bible, when Jacob dreams he saw a stairway resting on earth. The top was in heaven and the angels on it were climbing up and down. During the dream God spoke to Jacob and told him 'all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring'. Spokesman for Cheddar Gorge and Caves, Bob Smart said: "Our research showed that people didn't know that the name was a reference to the Bible, and it was becoming less and less resonant. We renamed it to The 274 Steps, because that's basically what it is. "It does exactly what it says on the tin." Tickets, leaflets and brochures for the summer season will be printed with the new name on, and the sign reading Jacob's Ladder will be changed when money is available.
