THE first half marathon held in Weston in 20 years was held at the Grand Pier on Saturday, with more than 400 runners completing the 13.1-mile run.

The race, organised by Freak Events, raised money for a host of local and national charities including the RNLI, Children’s Hospice South West and Weston Hospicecare.

Competitors ran from the Grand Pier to Uphill and back up to the former toll road for two laps.

Grand Pier spokeswoman Liz Lewis said: “Thousands of people lined the promenade and there was a great turnout despite the weather.

“The challenge was completed by 432 runners.

“It was such a success that we are already planning the Grand Pier half-marathon for next year.”

The 2013 race has already been confirmed for September 22.
