AN 84-YEAR-OLD pensioner from Weston has voluntarily given up driving after nearly 70 years because he says elderly people are not safe to be on the road.Leonard Trowbridge, who used to drive for both Avon and Somerset ambulance services, has given up his car keys and sold his car.Mr Trowbridge said: "These days you can't compare the volume of traffic on the roads."There is no place for us oldies on the road. We are a nuisance and I am not going to wait for an accident to happen."I have travelled all over world and been accident free all my life."Before I retired I always assumed you had to give up driving when you were 70 and I still think that should be the case."Leonard, who lives with his wife Stella, aged 82, first learnt to drive when he was 17 and his first car was a Morris Minor 8. The great grandfather says there are benefits to taking the bus these days.He said: "I've got a better bank balance now with no petrol to pay for, no repairs and no MOT."My grandchildren say 'good luck to you grandad'.
