A GRANDMOTHER says she will leave Worle after suffering a terrifying ordeal when masked men armed with hammers forced their way into her home.Jayne Birch was asleep in her flat with her 79-year-old mother in the next room when two armed burglars smashed through her front door at 2am on Tuesday (May 23).They barricaded themselves into the bedroom as the burglars pounded hammers into the door demanding money. The pair waited for it to go quiet before they ventured back into the hallway and called the police. An ambulance was called for Jayne's mother Joan who was traumatised by the break-in.Police believe the attackers thought the flat in Wansbrough Road was linked to the newsagents below and were hoping to steal the shop's takings.Jayne, who has two sons and four grandchildren, moved to the area five years ago from Walsall for a fresh start after her partner died. But after the terrifying ordeal the 49-year-old plans to leave the area and move back to the West Midlands. She said: "I heard a really loud crash and jumped straight out of bed and ran into the hall. "I literally bumped into two men with hooded tops pulled tight around their faces waving hammers at me screaming and shouting for the takings."It was pitch black and they forced me and my mum back into the bedroom. But my mum shut the door on them and we kept them out."They started hammering into the door and we were terrified but then it just went deadly quiet."I came out and they had gone but there were hammer holes in my doors and walls. They stole two mobile phones and my mum's handbag, but they shut the front door."My mum was in shock and my dogs were petrified. The police were great and stayed with us through the night but we couldn't sleep."The shop below has suffered break-ins and even a ram-raid before now, but I've never had any trouble before."My sons have told me I have to move back home where they can look after me and I think that's exactly what I'm going to do."The burglars are described as being in their early 20s, white and with local accents. One was about 5ft 10ins tall, slim and was wearing jeans, a grey hooded top and trainers.Anyone with information about the incident should call Weston Police Station on 0845 456 7000.
