A GRANDFATHER handed more than £800 from his wife's funeral to Weston RNLI.

Barry Maynard brought his 11-year-old grandson Liam Edwards to Birnbeck Pier after he raised £160 from a sponsored swim.

Mr Maynard’s wife and Liam’s grandmother Kath Maynard visited the station with them.

When she died in December, Mr Maynard asked for donations to the RNLI instead of flowers.

More than 100 people helped raise a total of £893 at her funeral.

Lifeboat operations manager Pete Holder said: “It is wonderful to have this huge amount of money and although sad that it is due to an untimely death, we will ensure it is put to good use.

“Her memory will live on in the work we do, saving lives at sea.”
