A DEVOTED brother is campaigning to get disabled badge holders more free parking time on Weston seafront in memory of his sister.John Pittman says it is unfair people with disabilities are only allowed one free hour parking on the seafront before having to pay the full amount of £3 for four hours or £5 for the whole day.Mr Pittman took his severely disabled sister, Mary Pittman, from Axbridge for weekly outings to the seaside for almost three years before her death earlier this year. The 63-year-old retired helicopter engineer said the 30 of the 60 free minutes allowed to his sister as a disabled badge holders were taken up by getting her in and out of the car. The remaining 30 minutes were barely enough for his sister to eat an ice-cream or have a cup of tea, he says.He is angry North Somerset Council has turned down his plea to give badge holders more free time and says he is campaigning for the sake of other disabled people.Mr Pittman, who lives in Yeovil, said: "The council is penalising the most vulnerable people in society and I think it is callous."It is too late for Mary but I want to help other people in similar circumstances."In a letter to Mr Pittman's MP, David Laws, in March, council leader Alan Hockridge said: "This policy was made early last year and we have no plans to review it at this time."There are many other places he (Mr Pittman) can park free with a blue badge for three hours."The policy was changed because many seafront spaces were taken up by disabled badge holders parking for three hours to go into town rather than the intended use of parking for seafront leisure use.
